Through its campaigns and programmes, English PEN promotes the freedom to write and the freedom to read. Internationally, English PEN campaigns on behalf of persecuted writers, editors and publishers. In the UK, it campaigns to reform laws that curb free expression, and for greater access to literature. It runs a number of programmes for creative writing and translation and a busy events programme. Each year, a dedicated committee of professionals selects between books that are translated into English from a wide variety of foreign languages.

PEN Translates! To participate, schools must register first — between 1 September and 20 October. Rules and instructions are available on the EC website. Publishers must apply at least three months before the translation is due to be published. Please note that the board meeting at which applications to this round will be considered will take place in mid-December. All applicants must submit a sample of the translation to Literature Ireland, which is then assessed by an independent expert.

Successful applicants will be sent a formal letter of award, and contracts will be posted within ten days of the board meeting. Publishers awarded a grant must submit the following items to Literature Ireland in order to receive payment of the translation grant:. Please note: Literature Ireland will normally only award a maximum of three translation grants per annum to a given publisher.

We were not lucky this time, but it was a really nice experience and we are really proud of you! In my last term at Pitsford, Dr Cabrera found me and asked if I would like to take part in the Juvenes Translatores competition, hosted ironically by the EU Commission, which I accepted. Children of 17 years old could take part in an international translation competition against others of the same age across the entirety of the EU.

Having studied French AS I decided to give it a go and I was tasked with an email from a supposed penpal written in French. For the past 13 years the Juvenes Translatores Translation Competition have been promoting language learning and the vocation of linguists among young people.

Again this year, 17 year old secondary school students, born inwill be able to participate. The competition will feature a one-page text in one of the 24 official languages of the EU which have to be translated into another one of these languages. Professional translators of the European Commission will evaluate the entries and select a winner from each EU Member State.

The winners get invited to Brussels with their teachers and parents by Juvenes Translatores to attend a fantastic prize-giving award ceremony at the Commission headquarters.

In turn, the students will learn that language truly is an essential element of intercultural dialogue and a part of European integration and global citizenship. Through multilingualism, young people will be better equipped for the job market.

It will open new opportunities both in their home country and abroad. The registrations for the competitions closes on the 20th of October so be quick if you know anyone who would want participate! If you continue to use this site we will assume that you are happy with it.This summer we are running a mini translation competition for learners of French and German in Years 10, 11, 12 and Winners will receive books and certificates. Please click below to download the competition worksheets and the instructions for teachers. The deadline is Friday 31 July. Entrants will translate a passage from one of those languages into English, and will also have the opportunity to submit more 'imaginative' translations — a passage from a novel might be reimagined as a short film or comic strip, for example.

Entry will be free for state schools, but we expect to request a small donation from participating independent schools.

All participating teachers will receive a teaching pack with videos, worksheets and presentations featuring students of Modern Languages at Oxford University. The first pack will provide teaching material for European Day of Languages and International Translation Day, both of which fall at the end of September.
